Review of Daruma of Tokyo (95 Middle Neck Road)

Review of Daruma of Tokyo (95 Middle Neck Road)

With so many sushi restaurants in Great Neck, it was only a matter of time before we came to the granddaddy of them all: Daruma of Tokyo. Daruma has a storied history in Great Neck. The story I hear most often about it is that it’s a restuarant frequented by Great Neck’s own Olympians Sarah and Emily Hughes, and that the Hughes family was eating there when Emily got news that she got news she made the 2006 Olympic team. Daruma is also notable for one of the popular vendors at Citi Field (there’s a giant banner signed by the 2000 NL Champion Mets by the front door), as well as having been a caterer to the UN. Daruma has been in Great Neck for 27 years. Back in the mid-80′s when it started, raw fish was still an oddity. Today, it’s not uncommon to see Daruma filled with families, high school kids, and middle school kids munching away. I was always a little perplexed looking at reviews on Yelp and Yahoo, where the reviews seems to be either five-stars or one-star. So I decided to try it for myself. The restaurant definitely has a bright decor. The walls are…

Review of Naru Sushi (25 Cuttermill Road)

Review of Naru Sushi (25 Cuttermill Road)

Naru Sushi is a perfect example of why I don’t really trust sites like Yelp anymore to get a really accurate picture of a restaurant. You have a couple 5-star reviews that make the restaurant look like the next incarnation of Masa. Then, you have some elitist Yelpers giving it 1- and 2- star ratings in an effort to drag it down. The problems with sites like Yelp is that everyone approaches restaurants with a different perspective. One person may rate McDonald’s five star because they were starving and needed a meal, while another person might rate Le Bernadin 1 star because the waiter looked at them funny. As for Naru Sushi, I wouldn’t give it 5 stars and I certainly wouldn’t give it 2 stars. I’d say it sits squarely in between at a solid 3.5 stars. The sushi is fresh, which of course is the most important thing in a sushi restaurant. The restaurant itself is cozy and makes good use of its limited space. There are tables for outdoor dining on nice day, and inside the decor is simple and tastefully Asian. I like to order their Bento Box. It’s $19.95 for dinner and $10.95 for lunch.…

Review of Miraku (31 South Middle Neck Road, Great Neck) – CLOSED

Review of Miraku (31 South Middle Neck Road, Great Neck) – CLOSED

South Middle Neck road is a part of town that’s pretty easily missed. As you’re driving into Great Neck on Middle Neck Road, it’s the small parcel of stores to your right just before you hit the train station (on the other side of the road of the Waldbaum’s complex). Take my advice–don’t miss it again. Miraku is a newcomer to the Great Neck dining scene, and it is a winner. When you enter the store, you’ll get yelled at by everyone in the store. Don’t panic, they’re yelling “do itashimashite”, which means “welcome” in Japanese and is a traditional way of greeting people in traditional Asian restaurants. My first impression of the decor was that it was very trendy. There’s a trendy sushi bar with a neon blue glow. There are traditional booths to the side of the restaurant, and regular tables in the middle. It’s got a feel that’s both modern and yet traditional (the lighting inside coordinates well with the actual paper lanterns outside, which gives it a distinctly Japanese feel), which is appropriate given that their restaurant serves contemporary Japanese food inspired by traditional dishes. There was some generic Asian-inspired poppy music in the background which…

Review of Era Asian Cuisine / Hinata (6 Bond Street, Great Neck)

Review of Era Asian Cuisine / Hinata (6 Bond Street, Great Neck)

Era Asian Cuisine Decent Asian fare with an impressive all-you-can-eat option Most all-you-can-eat restaurants are characterized by mediocre-to-poorly prepared food and a literal lack of service, making you go to a trough to collect your own food. Era Asian Cuisine does the impossible: combining high quality food with table service, all at a fixed price. Rating by steve: 4.5 stars Era Asian Cuisine (formerly Hinata) is a sushi restaurant on Bond Street that like most Asian restaurants in Great Neck seems to have jumped on the “Fusion” bandwagon. “Fusion” is another way of saying “whether you’re in the mood for Chinese, Thai, Japanese, or sushi, hopefully you’ll find a dish you like here”. We came on a Friday night. The restaurant wasn’t easy to find, despite being smack in the middle of Bond Street. The culprit is some very unfortunate signage. The name of the restaurant is hardly visible within a bright orange logo. I hear that they are in the process of rebranding their restaurant; hopefully the next time they’ll display the name of their restaurant much more prominently. Inside the restaurant the decor is very simple and understated. There’s an outdoor seating area, a more casual area as…

Review of Matsuya Sushi (6 Great Neck Road, Great Neck)

Review of Matsuya Sushi (6 Great Neck Road, Great Neck)

Matsuya Sushi One of the better sushi experiences in Great Neck Matsuya has an enormous number of rolls to choose from, and to their great credit they use fresh fish and never the kind of carbon monoxide-treated fish that’s so prevant at sushi buffets and discount restaurants. It is definitely among the upper echelon of sushi restaurants in Great Neck. Rating by steve: 4.0 stars When my friend Harris, a long time Great Neck resident, wanted to take me out for sushi a few years ago when I was new to Great Neck, there were a lot to choose from. It surprised me that he chose to take me to Matsuya (in the Waldbaum’s supermarket). After all, Daruma was by far the more well-known sushi restaurant in Great Neck. Turns out my friend knew what he was talking about. In the years since, Matsuya has grown from a little unknown sushi joint in a strip mall to one of the better sushi places on Long Island. When you walk in the door, you’re treated to the best decor I’ve seen in a Great Neck restaurant. Yes, that’s a beautiful tropical fish tank that spans the entire middle of the restaurant.…
