Review of Mario’s Pizzeria (43 Great Neck Road)

Review of Mario’s Pizzeria (43 Great Neck Road)

Mario’s Pizzeria is a Long Island icon. 35 years ago, the first Mario’s Pizzeria opened in Oyster Bay. Since then, it’s expanded to six additional locations throughout Long Island in Syosset, Plainview, Seaford, Westbury, East Northport, and Great Neck. Mario’s in Great Neck is located on Great Neck Road, just across from the Waldbaum’s shopping center. I wouldn’t call it the “neighborhood pizza joint” (that title falls distinctly to Gino’s) nor would I call it an “Italian restaurant” (I’ve probably have to give that to Oevo). I think the best way to summarize it is that it falls squarely in the middle. One thing that Mario’s has a lot of is coupons. If you look at the back of your Waldbaum’s receipt, in your Valpak, in your Square Deals book, or anywhere else you find coupons, chances are you’ll find one for Mario’s. In my case, I happened to have a coupon for a free baked Ziti with purchase of a pizza. I ordered the special pizza with Pepperoni, Sausage, Meatball, Mushroom, Green Peppers, Onions, Pizza Sauce, Mozzarella and Romano Cheese. It was not cheap at $20, but the ziti made the price a little easier to swallow. Wanting to…

Review of La Rotonda Pizza Restaurant (8 Bond Street, Great Neck)

Review of La Rotonda Pizza Restaurant (8 Bond Street, Great Neck)

After I first moved to Great Neck, my then-boss was kind enough to give me a gift certificate to La Rotonda, saying it was the best thin-crust brick oven pizza I’d ever have. When you walk into La Rotonda, you’re brought into a different world. The decor feels like old Italy, with plenty of paintings of Italy and a cozy, brick motif. As you walk in, you can see the real brick oven in back constantly working. I went with a big group, so we decided to sample a whole bunch of their pizzas. But first, we started out with bread. There was fresh Italian bread and cut-up tomato pie. I kid you not–I could have eaten just the bread and been satisfied for the night. The sauce on the tomato pie was sweet, light, and slightly garlicy without being too salty. We went on to try the oriental salad. This one was admittedly a bit underwhelming. It was just a garden salad with onions, tomatoes, and lettuce. What made it “oriental” was a sweet ginger sesame dressing. Not bad, but nothing to write home about. Of course, we had to try several of the pizzas. We started with the…

Review of Gino’s Pizza and Restaurant (60 Middle Neck Road, Great Neck)

Review of Gino’s Pizza and Restaurant (60 Middle Neck Road, Great Neck)

When I first moved to Great Neck, the first thing locals said to me was “You have to go to Gino’s”. They raved about how the pizza was the best in the world. One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that everyone is fanatical about their local pizza place. Growing up in Princeton Junction, NJ, our local pizza place was a place called Aljon’s. The pizza was floppy and orange grease poured off of it like a faucet, but to this day almost 30 years later my sister and I still say it’s among the best pizza on the face of the planet. I think this is because the local pizzeria transcends mere culinary tastes. It can represent your childhood, or happy times in your life from family gatherings to exciting times watching great sporting events. I tend to feel the same way about Gino’s pizza, now that I’ve been living in Great Neck for almost 10 years. Their pizza has been very good to me and has brought me through many late nights, ball games, and quick easy meals. As for the pizza itself, there are plenty of stories of locals who feel the pizza is so good…
