Review of Bevanda (570 Middle Neck Road)

IMG_6730

Bevanda An excellent Northern Italian fine dining experience right here in Great Neck. Great Neck has its share of Italian restaurants, but most deal in the familiar cooking of south Italy: spaghetti, pizza, and the like with influences from the Mediterranean. Bevanda represents the Northern Italian school of cooking, which has more influences from fine French and European cooking. I definitely recommend it. Rating by steve: 4.5 stars REVISED POST – January 27, 2013 This is one of those rare reviews where I wrote a review and I’m changing it only a few weeks later after re-visiting the restaurant and having a much better experience. The first time I visited Bevanda (below) was on a weekday. In all honesty, it was a little depressing going there, as Lisa and I were among the only patrons in the whole place. But what a difference a weekend makes. Lisa’s dad is moving back to Taiwan after more than 20 years of living in the United States. We wanted to send him off in style. We’ve already done the Peter Luger thing for his birthday, so we wanted to take him to another special place in Great Neck. Lisa mentioned to me that…

Review of Cafe Rustica (200 Middle Neck Road)

a little italy in great neck new york

Cafe Rustica A little bit of Italy in Great Neck Cafe Rustica was a welcome surprise. Despite a non-descript locale and suspect marketing, we found this to have some of the most authentic and delicious Italian food in Great Neck Rating by steve: 4.5 stars I have to admit, I was a little skeptical about Cafe Rustica. Cafe Rustica was one of those restaurants I’d see pop up time and time again in coupon books and discount Web sites. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but sometimes if I see too many coupons I start to wonder if a restaurant isn’t desperate for customers. Making matters worse, a cadre of ne’er-do-wells decided to leave one-star reviews at Yelp, dragging its rating to an unpleasant low. I take all Yelp scores with a grain of salt, but I admit the rating did have an effect on my perception going in. Cafe Rustica certainly was not short on customers the Sunday evening we went. Every table was filled. It was interesting to me that both Cafe Rustica and Sushi Palace (very close to each other) were filled on Sunday nights when other restaurants tend to be on the empty side. I…

Review of La Bottega / Mangia Bene (526 Middle Neck Road)

Review of La Bottega / Mangia Bene (526 Middle Neck Road)

It took me a while to figure this out, but there are actually two restaurants in one here. “Mangia Bene” (Italian for “Good Eats”) is a regular pizzeria with bright lights and a casual decor, while “La Bottega” (Italian for “The Shop”) is a fine dining experience next door, with dim lighting and tasteful decor (with the possible exception of the rather tacky chef chalkboard where the specials are written). This was the configuration of the original Italian restaurant, Scotto’s, which occupied this space for over 40 years and was a legend in Great Neck (the Scotto Brothers have since gone on to bigger things, opening catering venues like Fox Hollow and Chateau Briand). We decided to visit La Bottega, using the Groupon I posted here a few weeks ago. In all honesty, most of the time I use Groupons I just take the deal and never come back. But this is once of the first times that I will definitely be back. The food and service were that good. I’ll be honest, one of the reasons I really can’t stand (or trust) Yelp very much anymore is that a few “elites” from the City tend to swoop in on…
