Deli

Of course, Great Neck has a vibrant Jewish community, which also means that it boasts some of the most impressive Delis in the area, most of which have substantial Kosher options.

Review of Poultry Mart (33 Middle Neck Road)

Review of Poultry Mart (33 Middle Neck Road)

More than once I’ve heard people say that Poultry Mart is “The Best Kept Secret in Great Neck”. It’s true, I must have passed by their door on Middle Neck Road a thousand times without even thinking of going in. I mean, I’d see the chicken in the window, but the signage was always so subtle that it never struck me to go inside. One day, my fiance Lisa (whose arms and legs you’ll occasionally see in pictures on this site) came down with the flu. My first instinct of course was–chicken soup. That chicken soup helps clear colds and the flu isn’t just an old wives’ tale–it actually has scientific backing. After all, the salt and the heat in the soup helps kill germs, the meat provides necessary protein for strength, and the vegetables provide nutrients. At least that’s the story I’m going with. So, after searching for the best chicken soup in Great Neck, my journey ended up at the Poultry Mart. I went to the counter and asked them for chicken soup, when the man pointed behind me. There, I saw a refrigerator full of plastic container with chicken soup. I grabbed two and brought them to…

Review of Kensington Deli (27A Middle Neck Road)

Review of Kensington Deli (27A Middle Neck Road)

While sandwich shops like Juliebelles will satisfy you if you want a good chicken cutlet or steak sandwich, there is no substitute for a good old fashioned Jewish deli. And one of the best in the New York area (and therefore, the world), is an unassuming little shop right here in Great Neck. The first time I heard about Kensington Deli, I was telling a Jewish friend of mine how much I enjoyed Ben’s in Carle Place. He chuckled at me and said that if I wanted a real deli sandwich, I absolutely had to go to Kensington. The deli itself is rather unassuming. When you walk in, you immediately see the hot dogs cooking near the window and a deli case full of everything from cole slaw to various salads to chicken cutlets. And of course, lots of pickles. At the counter, you see stacks of small potato pancakes. When we walked in we were greeted in a gruff (but not unfriendly) manner. We were led past the deli case and past a row of barstools to a tiny booth for two. This is the kind of place where you’re expected to know what you want right away, so…

Review of Bruce’s Restaurant and Bakery (34 Middle Neck Road) – CLOSED

Review of Bruce’s Restaurant and Bakery (34 Middle Neck Road) – CLOSED

Bruce’s Bakery is a Great Neck landmark. Walk into the door and see the wall of famous people and you’ll see photos and letters from sports celebrities, superstars, and presidents. And something else I love about Bruce’s–he’s an unabashed Yankees fan, and has been one since way before it was “hip” to like the Yankees (if you suffered through the 1980s you’ll know what I mean). If this were a review of the bakery, it’d easily get 5 stars from me. Every time there’s a special occasion like an office birthday party and I need something baked, I go straight to Bruce’s–and get rave reviews. Most of the time I’ll get a cheesecake or a chocolate cake. (Be sure to ask them for something that’s been freshly made–once I got a fruit tart that I realized later had been sitting a little too long). Every now and then you’ll see something really special in the bakery case. Last Fourth of July, I saw them bring out this one and grabbed it right away. So again, from the bakery perspective, Bruce’s Bakery hands-down gets 5 stars from me. But since this blog reviews Great Neck restaurants, I’ll focus the rest of…
